A well-designed commercial roof can protect a home for decades and look beautiful at the same time. The best residential roofs use classic roofing materials like metal roofing or asphalt shingles. They are also built to direct water away from the property. The video below can teach you about the basics of a well-designed residential roof.
Residential roofing starts with a solid foundation that gives structural support to the roofing materials above it. This structure includes the rafters and roof deck.
On top of the roof deck is a high-quality moisture barrier. This layer protects the most vulnerable areas of your roof from water infiltration. It may be installed all over the roof or just over the lower portions of the roof or around plumbing vents.
Next, a roof deck protection layer is added. Traditionally roof felt was used, but now, modern materials are used to extend the life of the roof. The roof deck protection is finished with a metal drip edge that diverts water off the roof and into the gutters.
These materials are the foundation for asphalt shingles, which are professionally installed from the bottom up to the ridge line. At the ridge line, specialized shingles divert water down either side of the roof.
